Foundational Theology

The following are the beliefs of Piney Grove Church based on the foundational truths taught in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible and through revelation of the Holy Spirit.

The Lord Jesus Christ

We believe that Jesus is the Son of God and was with the Father before the beginning of time. At the appointed time of God, He became a man, having been born of a virgin, and was tempted to sin in His humanness, much like we are, but He conquered sin by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus became the Word made flesh to reveal the Father’s love to a fallen world. By dying on the cross, He took our sins upon Himself and paid the sacrificial penalty of His own shed blood to atone for sin. Thus, Jesus claimed victory over spiritual death once and for all time.  Those who believe in Him, repent of their sin and become His followers may have eternal life as Jesus has conquered physical death as well by His resurrection from the dead. Jesus then ascended into Heaven where He continually intercedes for us, and at the appointed time of God, He will return to unite the true church of God with the Father.

The Trinity

We believe there is One True God who reveals Himself to us in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are all the same God. They have the same nature, attributes, perfection, and are all worthy of the same honor, worship and praise.

God the father

We believe the Father created all things and is continually active in all He has created. We believe that He is faithful to fulfill every promise and He works all things for the good to those who love Him. (Romans 8:28)

The Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit has been active as a part of the triune God for all eternity.  When Jesus ascended to the Father, He sent the Holy Spirit to empower the Church as counselor, teacher, and comforter on the day of Pentecost. He, the Holy Spirit, now dwells in every believer and unites all believers into one body, the Church. He is the source of all divine power and holy service, restraining evil in the world, convicting mankind of sin, and sealing all believers until the day of redemption. We also believe that all the gifts of the Holy Spirit are active in the Church demonstrating the full glory of the Trinity.

the Bible

We believe that the Bible is the Word of God as inspired by the Holy Spirit. We believe the Holy Bible to be the standard by which we are guided in our ways of living.  We believe the Holy Bible is God’s revelation to us for all time and the time yet to come.

Salvation

Repentance of sin and faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ upon the cross as the necessary means of providing salvation through His shed blood is the one and only way to truly experience the sacrament of salvation.  We believe salvation is a gift of God’s grace and not the result of anything for which we humans may take credit.

Baptism

We believe that water baptism is a sacramental means of grace.  Baptism, being an outward sign of an inward Holy movement of God thus may be experienced individually.  We believe the Holy Spirit being present at baptism is essential.  We practice three modes of baptism: immersion, effusion (pouring) and aspersion (sprinkling).  We embrace the essence of being ‘whelmed’ by the Holy Spirit at one’s baptism, regardless of age or previous state.  We also embrace the Baptism of the Holy Spirit which may occur prior to, simultaneously or following one’s water baptism.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

– Romans 8:38-39
